The Well Coffeehouse Review Downtown Boston

the well coffee house

The Well is Boston’s only non-profit coffeehouse, with two locations in South Station and on State Street. It’s also one of the only spots that serves cold brew in light, medium, and dark varieties, if you’re particular about caffeine on ice (we are). Otherwise, there’s also a large selection of flavored drinks with things like white chocolate, English toffee, and coconut. As a head’s up - the wifi at State Street can be slow, in case you’re trying to get some work done when you stop by.

From sourcing to roasting, preparing and serving, we strive to constantly improve. Balancing quality and speed, freshness and efficiency, we believe every cup deserves to be savored. Our farmer partners around the world work hard to deliver on excellence. Go Get Em Tiger is the growing coffee empire by Kyle Glanville and Charles Babinski, a duo whose original G&B Coffee stall just so happens to be its own staple at Grand Central Market. With eight locations currently running throughout the city, Go Get Em Tiger has fast become a hometown chain with consistency, but with enough charm and nuance at each outpost to keep things fresh. Customers can choose from to-go goods and grab-and-go bottles of house-made cold brew, or take a patio seat to take in the funky, fun spaces with pastries, brunchy bites and retail items.

New York City, NY

The third wave, multi-roaster coffee boasts two locations in St. Louis, and is officially an extension of Art Saint Louis, a nonprofit organization that beautifies St. Louis through the work of local artists. Featuring a rotating wheel of roasters—such as Equator Coffee, Vessel Coffee Roasters, Arcade and Steadfast—you’re bound to find something you like. Our mission is to create high quality coffee house environments that produce opportunities to build relationships, serve the community, demonstrate love, present the Gospel, and bring glory to Jesus. Tourists and Westsiders might wait in long lines at Intelligentsia up the street, but Silver Lake locals prefer Cafecito, the quieter shop up on Hoover.

Turning Coffee Into Water

As a missional coffeehouse focused on sustainable solutions to poverty, we turn profits into hope. We do this by creating a product you love, serving you with a smile, and giving our profits to people in need. Greater Goods Coffee in Austin is all about amazing craft coffee, while supporting local charities. Their roasting process even has clean emissions and requires 80% less energy consumption compared to other roasters. Check out one of two cafe locations, supporting local charities including Boys & Girls Club, Austin Pets Alive! Nashville locals will recognize The Well Coffeehouse, which opened a location in Fishers right outside Indianapolis in 2016.

FEED Shop & Cafe

The name harkens to the year the UN first set forth guidelines to protect refugees. To start, the new Well Coffee House location is operating from 10 a.m. To 2 p.m., with plans to expand hours soon to operate from 7 a.m. The cafe also plans to host community gatherings and music performances. Due out on Tuesday, “Real Americans” is a remarkable tale about three generations of a family that spans seven decades, and shuttles from China during the Cultural Revolution to the publishing world of late ’90s Manhattan to an oyster farm in Washington state.

The Meantime is a student-run, nonprofit coffee shop located in the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s Center for Social Justice and Social Innovation. Brewing beans from local Carrboro Coffee Roasters, the coffee shop re-invests its profits into student scholarships and grants for those making an impact on campus. The suicide prevention nonprofit Hope for the Day partnered with roaster Dark Matter Coffee to open this social enterprise coffee shop in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood.

You can follow her latest creative endeavors and musings at The Kind Citizen or on Instagram at @alice.zhng. We've been serving up coffee and food to the Nashville community since 2012. The meeting went so well, and the email Freeman sent afterward was so compelling (he offered to be her longtime editor, snowplow, hurricane lamp, map holder and in-house fire starter, among other things) that Khong signed a deal with Knopf five days later.

Coffee Company

Formerly a private home, Aroma Coffee & Tea Company transformed itself into a darling café where you can grab a coffee, slice of cake or full-on meal. The expansive coffee and tea menu caters to everyone, from the espresso lover to the chai-latte enthusiast. Inside the cafe, a library-like atmosphere—complete with fireplace—makes it feel like you’re chilling at home, while outside is more casual with a back patio and some tables on the front sidewalk.

Crossroads Cafe

Located on the outskirts of Orlando, Duo 58 Cafe is a nonprofit social enterprise, providing both coffee and catering, to the local community. For every purchase made, DUO58 partners with Mission of Hope to provide education and meals for a child in Haiti. The cafe also has a year-long part-time job program for individuals looking for a stepping stone into something more stable. Over 90% of coffee production takes place in developing countries, so we’re excited by the latest wave of coffee shops looking to do good—by sourcing fair-trade beans, giving back through nonprofit partners, or employing marginalized groups. Here are 36 coffee shops in the United States looking to shake up the $100 billion industry, featuring some names you might recognize, too (Hugh Jackman, anyone?).

At the TOMS flagship in Venice Beach, featuring the famous “one for one” alpargata shoes (in limited edition colors and styles), stop by and grab some beans at TOMS Coffee, too. For each bag of coffee sold, TOMS will provide a week of clean water to someone in need through nonprofit partners with Water For People that build clean water systems. Check out TOMS Coffee locations also in Chicago, Austin, and New York. We are driven by our purpose to love coffee and love people even more. Our journey began in Nashville in 2012 to build community locally at our coffeehouses and to make an impact globally with our profits by building water wells, prioritizing safe water needs in the countries from which we source the world’s best coffee.

Here you’ll find less pretension and more privacy, not to mention an ethos that's all about sustainability and social justice. The shop is small, with only a bit of counter space inside, but a spacious and pet-friendly patio makes for a good place to get work done, catch up with friends or make eyes at your neighbor. Street parking can be tough to find, but bike racks abound for two-wheeled commuters. This charming Historic Filipinotown café offers all-day fare that's worth lingering over—already an easy feat, given the free Wi-Fi and creative coffee there, too. Small-batch, seasonal pastries like passion fruit pie with graham cracker crust; pecan and caramel coffee cake; and blackberry rhubarb galettes are so good you won't want to share, and go great with pour-over coffee and specials like vanilla-and-orange cappuccinos.

The Haven Coffeehouse sources beans directly from farmers in Guatemala and roasts them in house. The coffee shop also partners with nonprofit Lighthouse For Life in order to end human trafficking in the US, and provide restoration to young girls caught in the trade. It’s also the only locally-owned coffee shop in town, so coffee here is both a good and an obvious choice.

Open since 1960, this historic nonprofit cafe has been a true community cafe, providing monthly free lunches and connecting members to resources such as healthcare and housing. In addition, the cafe hosts a mindful meditation class, composts its coffee grounds, and uses 100% wind-powered electricity. Once you order your masala chai, you’ll be greeted by a back wall filled with a selection of books focusing on social justice, world religion, and memoirs.

Brunch, when omelettes and French toast galore get shuttled out of the kitchen to chic Valley dwellers. Well for Mad Lab, one of Downtown's top roasters, the name says it all. At the Hollywood window, simply stroll up and order from the menu or let whoever's behind the counter whip something up special for you while you nosh on fresh Clark Street pastries. Named after a competitive French cycling term, this small bike-friendly coffee shop in Culver City offers excellent breakfast burritos, market-priced single-origin matcha and a deep commitment to the surrounding community. Super Domestic's larger Washington Boulevard sister spot, Mañana Coffee, also sells a bevy of plants and other assorted artisan goods. Both coffee shops roast their own beans and make all alternative milks and syrups in-house, for quality you can taste in every sip.

In the drought season of Aceh, Sumatra, the broken water pipeline struggled to reach the coffee producers at elevation. You helped repair this pipeline to work efficiently in drought and invested into water recollection basins to operate in the rainy season. You provided water to hundreds through reconstruction in the wake of 2 hurricanes devastating the water infrastructure in San Antonio de Cortés, el Negrito and Chinda. The Well Coffee House is a non-profit organization staffed by volunteers who desire to be a blessing to others. Our first location opened on January 21st, 2014 in Boston's historic South Station. Come visit us on the Freedom Trail right next to the Old State House in downtown Boston.

A casual menu of rice bowls, breakfast sandwiches and toasts should do the trick, and if you want to bring the magic home, Doubting Thomas has its own blend of beans—as well as house-made concentrates for matcha, chai and beyond—which you can buy on-site. From lavender-flavored lattes to single-origin pour-overs, here are our favorite coffee shops across L.A. Featuring seven locations, Ascension Coffee is an Australian concept cafe that also believes deeply in international development in coffee-producing regions, especially in countries experiencing crisis.
